Crown Hill community backs petition for pedestrian crossing

Councillor Joel James launches bid to create safe crossing point for residents

RESIDENTS are backing a petition launched by a local councillor to install a controlled pedestrian crossing on Crown Hill.

The road has seen a large spike in traffic since it was joined to a major bypass in 2010.

“When the bypass was built residents called for a pedestrian crossing, but it wasn’t implemented, since then there have been a number of car accidents on the road including at least two pedestrians being hit by a car,” said Martin Chick, a local resident.

The road has dropped curbs to encourage residents to cross but there is no formal crossing in place.

Conservative Councillor Joel James, who represents Llantwit Fardre, suggests placing a crossing opposite the local community centre as this is where most pedestrians seem to be crossing.

The councillor’s petition was first launched in 2017 but was delayed when proposals for a new housing development took responsibility for installing the crossing, however these plans were later rejected by the council.

The petition was revived in March and has seen a significant resurgence of support.

So far it has received 852 signatures, but Coun James wants to reach the 1,000-name mark before formally presenting it to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

“I’m hopeful that we seem to be getting closer and closer to it and I think eventually we will get it,” said Coun James.
