New £1,000 scholarships announced for students taking a Welsh teaching course

Two-week programme will take place in Cardiff in July

THE National Centre for Learning Welsh will offer £1,000 for students to take a Welsh language adult teaching course.

The course will be taught in Cardiff and is the first of its kind to be offered by the centre.

They hope to encourage more young people to work in the teaching sector.

Daniel O’Callaghan, 21, taught Welsh to adults during lockdown through Cardiff University.

The course named Cymraeg i bawb (Welsh for all) teaches students of all ages Welsh through online lessons.

“I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and giving adults a better understanding of not only the language but Welsh culture too.

“I think the scholarship is a great way to get the ball rolling in reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050.”

Successful applicants will have living and maintenance costs covered by the centre along with the scholarship worth up to £1,000.

The two-week course will teach students basic teaching principles, lesson planning and technical training.

The course will take place from July 4-15 2022 but there is only space for 14 people.

The tweet by @learncymraeg says: “Scholarship worth £1,000!! Here is a great opportunity for 14 students to begin a journey to be a Welsh language tutor for adults. Two-weeks training in Cardiff at the beginning of July 2022. Fancy it?”

Efa Gruffudd Jones, chief executive of the centre said this was a unique opportunity for students.

“Some of the most experienced tutors in the teaching sector will be teaching on the course.

“There will be plenty of practical tasks and a chance to observe tutors as they’re teaching.

“We welcome students from all backgrounds and look forward to offering valuable experience in teaching to them.”

The centre is funded by the Welsh Government to provide a strategic lead for Welsh Adults learning in Wales.

Alaw Williams, 20, is another student who has taught Welsh to adults.

“It’s very pleasing to see so many adults wanting to learn Welsh. Some of my friends and I have taught this course part-time and I found it challenging yet rewarding.

“It gave me the skills to go into teaching in the future. Even if I choose another career path, I’ll still have those skills with me, I think they’re invaluable.”

The closing date to apply for the scholarship is December 31 and successful applicants will be announced at the end of January.
