Bikes worth £4,500 stolen from shed

Owners shocked over Cyncoed burglary as they slept

A CYNCOED couple had two bicycles worth a combined £4,500 stolen from their shed while they slept.

Overnight, on January 13 and January 14, the two bicycles were taken from the couple’s Cyncoed home.

“The feeling knowing that someone else has taken something that belongs to you and has been in your property, all for a small profit, is sickening,” said the owner, 58, who does not want to be named.

The bicycles, a Canyon Endurace CF SL Disc 8.0 Di2 Aero road bike priced at £4,000 and a Boardman MTB HT TEAM 2011-12 valued at £500, were stored in the back garden shed.

The couple only discovered the theft several hours after getting up on Friday.

“When I returned home from doing some work, I discovered that the shed had been forced open and the door was ajar, ” said the owner, who does not want to be named.

Bolt cutters appear to have been used to cut through the hasp.

The bikes were used regularly. The husband often cycled with friends locally and abroad in events.

“I would describe myself as a very keen cyclist,” he said,

“My road bike had literally just had some work done on it, being serviced in a local cycle shop, and it had only been back in the shed for a couple of days.”

The Boardman bike was bought in 2012 and the more expensive Canyon Endurace in November 2019. Both are insured.

“The trouble is that I may not be able to replace them with the same bikes. The implications and the costs outside of what your insurance covers can be a lot of money,” said the owner.

Bike theft in Cardiff has become a growing problem in recent months with the issue affecting food delivery workers and the Nextbike rental scheme as well as private owners.

South Wales Police are investigating.
