Splott Albion’s men’s and women’s football teams are both top of their leagues
FOOTBALL may be just a game, but Splott Albion’s teams are very good at it.
The men’s first team won 3-2 this weekend against Canton Liberals to continue their winning streak and are eleven points clear at the top of Division One in the Cardiff and District League.
Splott boasts a wealth of football teams catering to all age groups, and while the men’s first team are currently unbeaten, the women’s team are also top of the fourth tier of the Welsh Women’s League.
Gareth Hawke, Splott Albion’s treasurer, said: “We’ve got so many teams, the interest locally is outstanding. We started off with a men’s team years ago and we slowly added children’s teams. The women’s team started about five years ago.”
The club has teams for all different age groups from Under-5s to Under-16s.
Mr Hawke said: “There is not a lot for children to do in the Splott and Tremorfa area. So we started it off to get children more involved with the club and to keep them off the streets and busy.”
During the pandemic, the lack of socialising through community sport was difficult for teams.
“To be honest it was pretty devastating. We were at the football club most nights. When all that stopped the socialising stopped too. It was really hard over the course of the first lockdown,” said Mr Hawke.
The return of community football has been a huge boost for the area.
Ed Stubbs, Labour Councillor for Splott, said: “This has been a tough couple of years and it’s so great to see our sports clubs playing again.
“We are having some real sporting success in Splott and Tremorfa at the moment, both in football and rugby. One thing our sports teams all have in common is the dedication of the volunteers who keep them going. I am always in awe of the commitment they give.”
