Winter Wellbeing Festival at Grange Pavilion gives young people a chance to try new things
YOUNG people in Grangetown are being offered free art classes as an antidote to the frustrations of the pandemic.
The Winter Wellbeing Festival for 11 to 25-year-olds take place from 6pm on Wednesdays at Grange Pavilion as part of Cardiff Council’s Child Friendly City initiative.
“The whole idea is to provide young people from different backgrounds with fun activities to do around these challenging times. It’s directly linked to Covid-19 and the recovery in the pandemic,” said Ali Abdi, a Community Gateway Organiser who supports the Grangetown Youth Forum projects.
The festival started last Wednesday with visual artist Prith Biant leading a session. On January 26 the youngsters can try out abstract art and there is a clay modelling session on February 2.
The festival will continue until March 31 with other sessions delivered by scientists, sports players and health practitioners.
“We are excited to be providing these activities during the winter months for the young people of Grangetown. This enables them to be active, learn new skills, gain confidence, interact with various professionals and be exposed to opportunities in education to help them develop and grow as young people,” said Nirushan Sudarsan, the Youth Forum Director.
Cardiff University law and politics undergraduate Mr Sudarsan worked with Community Gateway organisers Mr Abdi and Corey Smith to secure £4,000 in funding from Cardiff Council.
The Winter Wellbeing Festival is in addition to the Youth Forum’s other activities such as the Cardiff City Foundation Kicks programme.
