Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern told the BBC: “This storm isn’t quite on the same scale as the Burns Night Storm – but it’s possibly one of the most powerful storms since we started naming them.”

St David’s Hall roof damaged

A section of Working Street in Cardiff City Centre has been cordoned off due to falling roof tiles.

The street outside St David’s Hall, on the edge of The Hayes is closed to the public for now because the concert hall’s roof may be unsafe for passers by.

House of Sport Airdome in Cardiff severely damaged

The inflatable building at The House of Sport in Leckwith appears to have been ripped in two by Storm Eunice’s powerful winds.

The £650,000 Airdome, which allows indoor sports training in bad weather, was opened in April 2016.

Road closures due to fallen trees

It’s not just in parks where fallen trees are causing problems.

Broken branches and falling foliage are blocking up roads. South Wales Police have updated travel advice because of the problem.

Victoria Park trees down

These photos show exactly why parks in Cardiff are closed today – huge branches are being sheared off in the high winds.

The council has closed Bute Park, Roath Park, Parc Cefn Onn, Victoria Park and Thomson Park. They will reopen once Storm Eunice has passed.

Cardiff Castle has also shut its doors for the day.

Mark Drakeford issues statement on Storm Eunice

First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, said in a statement: “A red warning has been issued for much of South Wales from 7am Friday, which means there is a danger to life.

“We’re constantly monitoring the situation and will keep you updated on any developments. Please make preparations today so you can keep yourself and loved ones safe.

“We’re working closely with national agencies, local authorities and the emergency services to prepare.

“We’re expecting significant disruption – all trains in Wales will be cancelled and many schools are closed – so please plan ahead and only travel if absolutely necessary.”
