Increased Broad Street traffic frustrates Canton drivers

Housing development is adding to problems along a residential street

HEAVY traffic is causing long delays on a residential street in south Canton.

Broad Street is close to the new housing developments, Cardiff City Stadium, schools and the retail park.

Canton Labour councillor Stephen Cunnah acknowledged there were problems in the area.

“Broad Street can get very busy with car traffic at times and it can be frustrating to be part of a queue. There are several reasons it can be busy, including the location of new housing developments, schools, the retail park, the City Stadium and the link road.”

Drivers use Broad Street to avoid congestion but residents says it is not a rat run.

Liz Williams said: “I’ve lived in the area for almost 40 years and have always considered it to be a legitimate route from Grosvenor Street to Leckwith Road and vice versa – not a rat run”.

The map below shows the four major hotspots of traffic activity in the Canton area, including Broad Street.

Coun Cunnah says the council’s plans to install a bus gate and build a new bus interchange, and the Welsh Government’s hopes of a new metro station at The Mill should reduce traffic in the area.

“I want all these schemes – and more – to be delivered as fast as possible and I regularly push for that,” he said.
