My bike was stolen on the third day of term: The reality of cycling in Cardiff

Are thieves preventing the city from reaching its green targets?

IN 2020, Cardiff was found by three different surveys to be the best city in the UK for cycling, the city where cyclists feel most unsafe and the bike theft capital of the UK.

Cardiff’s cyclists themselves are just as divided on the pros and cons of Cardiff’s cycling infrastructure.

Cardiff University student Adam Hart, 21 from Pembrokeshire had his bike stolen on just the third day of term.

Adam thinks that the lack of secure cycle parking is holding the city back from meeting its green targets.

“Businesses and organisations need to provide more secure cycle storage to encourage more people to cycle into the city,” he said.

Hire bike company Nextbike decided to temporarily suspend its Cardiff service in 2021 because of a “staggering” level of bike theft and vandalism.

Adam does believe however, that Cardiff’s extensive cycle network of bike lanes and routes is hugely encouraging, but small improvements could make cycling in Cardiff even more appealing to residents.
