Seven fire engines tackle blaze at Brewery Quarter

Residents and workers evacuated, Caroline Street cordoned off in major operation

A MAJOR fire broke out this afternoon (March 25) in the Brewery Quarter of Cardiff.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which saw seven fire engines and a cherry picker deployed to the incident.

The Brewery Quarter was closed to pedestrians and Caroline Street was cordoned off with fire hoses running down the road.

Several witnesses told The Cardiffian the fire started on Caroline Street. Workers at a nearby Nando’s said they had evacuated after seeing smoke billow from the area.

“I just started smelling smoke,” said Sebastian Samuel, 27, who lives in the Brewery Quarter.

“I thought my next-door neighbour’s flat was on fire. I was knocking on their door frantically. I was thinking ‘when should I call 999’ when I came out the front door and there was a massive fire engine there already.”

St Mary Street remains open to pedestrians on the opposite side but is closed to traffic past the Brewery Quarter entrance.

Reporters at the scene for The Cardiffian reported that the fire was being tackled by seven fire engines and a cherry picker.
