‘I am the guy that if something is broken, I want to see how to fix it’

Meet the Liberal Democrat candidate in the Splott by-election

THE Liberal Democrat candidate in Splott’s December by-election is looking to fix roads, crime and litter in the ward.

“By nature, I just want to fix things. I am the guy that if something is broken, I will see how to fix it,” said Cadan Tomos

He says by standing he is offering a change from the current all-Labour line-up in the ward.

“People in the area are pleasantly surprised to see me out campaigning,” he said.

Mr ap Tomos believes the state of roads in the area is an issue. He believes that the pavements need updating and the Magic Roundabout needs to be made safer.

The Millennium Centre communications manager is also concerned about anti-social behaviour and crime in the area.

He wants to add more youth clubs to give young people activities and spaces to learn new skills and prevent crime.

He also wants to restart Partnerships and Communities Together (PACT) meetings in the area to strengthen the link between the police and the community.

He wants to put more lights in Splott Park to improve safety, especially for women.

Litter and fly-tipping in Splott are also concerns to Mr ap Tomos. He said that Splott was one of five wards in Cardiff to miss its 2023-2024 target for keeping its highways of a high or acceptable standard of cleanliness.

A Dracula-clad Mr ap Tomos volunteered at the Keep Splott Tidy litter-pick over Halloween. He praised the group for its efforts but said the council should do more to keep the area clean.

Mr ap Tomos moved to Splott this summer but has lived in Cardiff for 10 years. He said the community was strong and had been very welcoming.

The last Lib Dem candidate to represent the Splott ward was Gavin Cox in 2008. Mr ap Tomos hopes to be the next.

The Splott by-election will be held on December 5.

The two candidates so far are:

  • Cadan ap Tomos, Liberal Democrat
  • Anny Anderson, Labour

The deadline for nominations is Friday November 8.
