Creigiau’s ‘much-loved’ sports hub is to be transformed with a £1m facelift

Plans for the Rec include a new pavilion, playground and a multi-use games area – with better access for all

CREIGIAU’S “much-loved” recreation ground will receive a £1 million facelift to improve accessibility, starting with a new pavilion designed to accommodate a boccia court.

“We want to provide a space for everyone. It is really about making sure people have the ability to play sport, not just the ability to pay for it,” said Daniel Clayton, a trustee of Creigiau Recreation Charity, which oversees the ground.

The Rec is already home to cricket, tennis, pétanque, archery and football but it is hoped that the new facilities will make it more accessible for older residents, those with limited mobility, and people with dementia.

“We want people to be able to visit the recreation area more often, and we hope to introduce more low-impact and social activities in the new hall,” said Iwan Griffiths, Creigiau Pétanque Club’s secretary.

Designed in collaboration with Disability Sport Wales, the new pavilion will be four times larger than the current one and feature ramps, wide doors, and level access.

The main event room will be large enough to accommodate the the Paralympic sport boccia. There will also be additional accessible and gender-neutral changing facilities, a larger kitchen and a viewing area.

The charity also intends to incorporate recycled water systems, solar power, and air-source heating into the build.

The Rec will also feature a multi-use games area, a playground, an outdoor exercise area, and a circuit trail suitable for all.

A graffiti artwork wall is also being included for those who use the separate skate park alongside the grounds.

The project coincides with the construction by Cardiff council of 650 new homes south of Creigiau. Existing community spaces are limited to the local church, scout hall and golf club.

“There’s currently no community centre, facilities or green spaces like this. There’s going to be some 10,000 people around here looking for somewhere to use, so there’s real value in the build,”  said Mr Clayton.

Funding has already been secured from Cardiff Council, the Welsh Government’s Community Facilities Programme and the Cymru Football Foundation, as well as through community fundraising efforts, including Creigiau’s carnival, quiz night and golf days.

Construction is expected to begin at the start of the 2025-26 financial year in April. The recreation ground will remain in use throughout.
