It has been a very mixed season for the sports teams of Cardiff.
From Cardiff Devils’ breathtaking victory against Sheffield Steelers to win their first trophy in nine years, we see a team at the top of their game, with hopes still of winning two more competitions this season.
And with Cardiff City’s last-gasp home defeat to Charlton Athletic, they looked a team bereft of ideas, with promotion hopes alleviated long ago.
In lieu of this, The Cardiffian is pitting Cardiff’s top sports teams against each other to see if the Devils can pick up a quick double, and win The Cardiffian Cup.
All you have to do is vote for your winner in our semi-finals and final in our polls!
First up are Sunday’s Challenge Cup winners Cardiff Devils, who take on roller derby side the Tiger Bay Brawlers.
The brawlers play an American sport created in the 1930s, which has been played in Cardiff since 2010, and they are the pioneers of roller derby in Wales.
Tiger Bay is a women-only team who play in the British Roller Derby Championships. In February this year, the Brawlers won the first two games of this year’s competition.
Last June they played in the East Coast Derby Extravaganza (ECDX) tournament in America – the first Welsh team ever to do so. Playing against teams ranked more than 50 places higher than them in the rankings, they defeated both the Garden City Rollergirls and Providence Roller Derby.
They are the third highest ranked team in the UK, the 10th highest in Europe, and the 60th highest in the world.
And their opposition this morning are none other than high flying Cardiff Devils.
Cardiff’s ice hockey team are at the peak of their powers having just won the Challenge Cup on Sunday, and are now on a nine game winning streak after their latest and most important victory. The team’s performances have consistently improved throughout the season and it looks set to be a grandstand finish in the league and playoffs for the Devils and their loyal support.
Thanks to all who voted! Tiger Bay Brawlers won with a majority of 51%. The second semi-final is on until 4.30Pm today between Cardiff City Rugby League and Cardiff City FC. Vote here, and be sure to check out Friday’s final!
