Queen Street’s ‘charming’ carousel to be replaced after nine years

A new attraction is set to arrive in its place next week

THE carousel on Cardiff’s Queen Street is being taken down after nearly a decade in place and is set to be completely removed by the end of today.

But a brand new carousel will take its place by next weekend.

Work to dismantle the ride began yesterday (March 24). It is owned by Sayers Amusements, which also operates Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland and Cardiff Bay Beach attractions.

“After nine years, we felt it is a perfect time to freshen up the attraction to capture something new and exciting on Queen Street,” said Norman Sayers, Director of Sayers Amusements.

A council spokesperson confirmed the plans to replace it, stating: “It is being taken down and replaced with a new one next weekend.”

The attraction has been a familly favouite on one of Cardiff’s main shopping streets for the best part of a decade.

“Every time we go to Cardiff my daughter, would go on the carousel again and again – one time she even went on it four times in a row – I’m so glad it is only being replaced,” said Anna Humphreys, mother to five-year-old, Tiana.

The carousel in 2015, 2020 and 2025.

Lee Lannon, 38, a father of seven, said: “It’s a positive for the capital. The carousel had a little charm to it, especially around Christmas with the dark evenings and the carousel all lit up, it was nice to see.

“I had a lot of memories with my daughter when she used to come over from Ireland, she used to always enjoy going on it and I think those are the memories a lot of parents have of this carousel. For a lot of single dads that have their kids on the weekends, it wasn’t expensive like so much these days,” he added.

It also has its place as a landmark in the city.

“I walk past it every single day. I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t here,” said commuter, Chris Hartley.

The current carousel is set to be relocated to another site, though its new destination has not been announced.
