Comics and Mangas have become so much more than simple stories for entertainment in the 21st century.
Comics have historically been regarded as children’s literature. Colourful characters going around on pages for volumes. At Forbidden Planet International, comics transcends into the realms of high literature with intricate and well-developed plots.
Although comics have been around since the end of the 19th century, their popularity really took off following the Great Depression. Most people think that the debut of Superman in 1938 marked the beginning of what is often referred to as the “golden age” of comics.
Peter, who has been working at the store for almost three years, says, “Now is the best time for comics. Comics are no longer a niche, with more sales than most literature.”
Manga books and comics have grown so much larger than their ‘nerdy’ tag. “So much good stuff now… we see an intermingling of culture thanks to the current pop scene. Mangas and comics are not just entertaining reads now but so much more than that,” adds Peter.
Peter at 48 years-old goes on to say, “They provide a sense of identity and belonging for many people. Fandoms can even help people make friends and build communities across boundaries. The impact is something we have never seen before.”
The two-story store on Duke Street in the City Centre is a treasure trove. Whether you are looking for manga books, action figures, designer toys, comics, apparel, or merchandise from around the world, Forbidden Planet has it all. They sell across all categories and genres.
Hanna, who works the counter upstairs, says, “We see a lot more people come in. Children, definitely, but primarily young adults.” She is a film and comic book fan herself.
The shop is chaotic yet well-organized. The team is pleasant and eager to assist you find the ideal fit.
“It’s brilliant… How the comic and manga book scene has grown. People are coming in and asking for recommendations on their first reads. We can see what they are into. It is great to see them return after they pick up their first,” said the staff.
The shop gets remarkably busy on weekends as more people come in. When talking to customers, one said, “I have a standing order for my favorite comic series with them. I guess, you could say I am one of those regulars.”
Forbidden Planet International waits for those looking to delve into something new and for those who know and love comics already. If reading is not your thing, their well-stocked merchandise collect is worth a drop-by.
