CARDIFF student Peter Budd has been given a six-month sentence, suspended for 15 months, following an assault on a fellow student.
Defendant Budd, 21, pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm after a sustained assault on Mr Barney Lloyd-Wood, 22.
Judge Furness heard Mr Budd entered Mr Lloyd-Wood’s home and hit him several times in the face.
Mr Budd believed his girlfriend was in the house and rushed inside and up the stairs to find her.
When Mr Lloyd-Wood came out of his room Budd punched him repeatedly in the face.
Housemates of Mr Lloyd-Wood claimed he taunted Budd about being in a relationship with his girlfriend. The pair had to be pulled apart. Mr Lloyd-Wood sustained extensive bruising and cuts to his face.
Budd admitted drinking before the assault took place.
Judge Jonathan Furness told Budd: “You have the whole world at your fingertips and it could have been ruined by a moment of drunken madness.
“I’m giving you a second chance but it must never happen again. Your actions are serious enough for a custodial sentence. It seems to me that actual bodily harm is as generous as it can be.
“You were clearly the aggressor in this case and you let your jealousy get the better of you.”
Judge Furness said Budd’s previous unblemished record and good character influenced his sentence. Budd was also given a £80 statutory surcharge payable to the court, and ordered to work 120 hours of unpaid work.
The judge warned Budd that failure to comply with his sentence would lead to further criminal proceedings.
