TALKS have begun to discuss the future of Adamsdown’s Communities First scheme.
STAR Communities First, based on Meteor Street, met with Cardiff Council officials on Wednesday, October 26, after the Welsh Minister for Communities and Children told the Assembly he may phase out the scheme.
Staff at STAR Communities First say they will continue operating as normal despite Carl Sargeant’s announcement on October 11 that he is “minded to phase out the … programme”.
Mr Sargeant launched a public consultation on Monday, October 24 to decide the future of the 52 Communities First groups based in deprived communities across Wales.
A spokesperson for STAR Communities First said: “We remain positive that the majority of projects we deliver address and support the key priorities that have been outlined by Welsh Government.
“We look forward to contributing to the consultation and working closely with the Welsh Government and all our partners to develop services that will continue to support and involve local people.”
STAR Communities First works with residents, businesses and community groups in Splott, Tremorfa, Adamsdown, and Roath.
In the last year the scheme’s workshops, classes and advice sessions in the four communities have:
- Helped 88 people find a secure job
- Improved the academic prospects of 508 children, and
- Swayed 848 people to make healthier lifestyle choices.
