Health watchdog tells Penarth patients ‘don’t panic’ over GP closure

South Glamorgan CHC reassures residents they should continue accessing Albert Road surgery

PATIENTS at a Penarth GP surgery earmarked for closure have been reassured by members of the local community health council.

Since it was announced that the Albert Road surgery was closing in March 2022, residents have expressed concern over the future of healthcare in the town.

These concerns were echoed by town councillor Gary Allman who argued more transparency was needed on the issue.

The GP surgery received a notice to vacate the premises from its landlord. It will continue to provide GP services until March 18, 2022 and will vacate the premises by April 1.

Stephen Allen, chief officer at South Glamorgan Community Health Council, has urged patients to remain at the surgery until the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board had worked through a solution.

“Let’s see what happens. Don’t panic. I appreciate it’s a big change, but we should wait until we know of a solution,” said Mr Allen.

He expected the update in December or early January.

Mr Allen said it was a difficult situation for the health board and it was working to reassure those in Penarth they would have access to a GP going forward”.

“I sympathise with patients’ concerns but let’s give the health board some breathing space to find a solution. Let’s calm things down a bit and there’s no need to worry at the moment.

“Let’s give the health board time to pull things together as there will be no change in status until after April,” urged Mr Allen.

He added that patients registered at Albert Road surgery should not move to another surgery because they would increase demand at Redlands and Penarth Health Partnerships.

Finding a new location for the practice is still an option, said Mr Allen, but nothing is certain.

“I don’t want to prejudge what may be decided. We need to wait until we know more. This is a developing situation,” he added.
