Vale residents to pay over £100 more in council tax than Cardiff neighbours

Balancing the budget was an ‘unprecedented financial challenge’, says council leader

RESIDENTS of the Vale of Glamorgan will pay on average £123 more council tax than their Cardiff neighbours in the coming year.

Both councils sent letters to residents this week, outlining what their payments will fund in the coming year.

“In simple terms, costs are rising at a much faster rate than funding, making it impossible to maintain services at current levels,” said leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Lis Burnett.

In Cardiff, council tax has increased by 6%, and in the Vale of Glamorgan it has increased by 6.7%

Councillor Burnett said balancing the budget this year had been an “unprecedented financial challenge” and she was proud the tax hadn’t been increased by more.

About one third of council funding comes from council tax, half from the Welsh Government and the rest is from business rates. In the case of the Vale of Glamorgan, council tax will bring in £99 million, while Cardiff will get £209 million this year.
