Citizens from various areas of Cardiff have been raising a lot of complaints about potholes on their streets causing problems to cyclists, drivers and bikers driving around.
Newport road topped the list with most number of reported potholes last year. Although the Cardiff Council has fixed way more potholes than the reported, a lot of work still needs to be done.
We asked the public about their experience with potholes on Cardiff’s streets and their opinion about the condition of roads and pavements in the city.
Eliza, 28, Student
“They (potholes) seem to be on the side of the road, so it is where you’re meant to cycle but you have to swerve out a lot of the time because of the potholes. I can see why some (pavements) might not be as safe for older people.”
Kathy, 65, retired
“There’s always been a problem because we’re on coal…Theres’s coal under here and it is always shifting. Look at it, it’s not great…You just gotta be on your toes.”
Muhammad, 40, Taxi Driver
” It is really bad. Firstly, there is no parking space, Cardiff is so overcrowded because of many taxi drivers and there are potholes in the parking. We are not happy, that’s it”
Ivan, 53, Customer Advisor
“When I cycle to cow bridge and you’re going quite fast, there’s not a lot of time to dodge a pothole. So it’s quite dangerous. These slabs(Pavements) are awful…they have just done work on them, but they’re still quite uneven.”
Adam, 71, Retired Educator
“It’s appalling, it’s really bad. (Recently) I have seen potholes which are two to three feet wide and a feet deep and I have gone around them. I have seen huge potholes very recently and it is a growing problem, but that’s all over the country.”
Tom, 31, Groundworks Employee
“(It’s) a very bad pothole problem. I encounter them on daily basis. There are a lot of them and not enough staff to fix them.”
Ali, 50, Taxi Driver
“Some roads are getting worse and worse. My car had damage so many while driving due to potholes… the condition is same over the years. If we pay Road tax then you have to sort those(roads) in Cardiff, especially the local ones.”
