Fly-tipping fears grow amid planned closure of recycling centre

A PILE of rubbish dumped in Wenallt woods has highlighted concerns surrounding the closure of Rhiwbina’s nearest recycling centre.
Rhiwbina resident, Leighton Anderson, 56, found the pile of rubbish when he was walking his dog.
The tree surgeon said: “I was totally enraged by what I found. I would like to urge anyone who knows about this to come forward so we can prevent it from happening again.”
Rhiwbina councillor, Jayne Cowan, was pleased with the council’s quick response to clear the mess. She said: “I am shocked and appalled. I have never seen fly-tipping on this level before. Incidents like this are costly and deviate the council from other jobs.”
Changes to recycling facilities around north Cardiff could see more incidents like this in the future.
Wedal Road, which is the most convenient site for Rhiwbina residents to dump household rubbish, is due to close when a rebuild of the site on Lamby Way is complete.
The closure of the Wedal Road site follows that of a similar facility in Waungron Road, which closed in 2014 despite the council investing £1m in it and residents’ efforts to keep it open.
Plans for the closure of Wedal Road, have seen similar protests from residents. Heath councillors Fenella Bowden and Lyn Hudson have received a lot of support for their petition to keep the facility.
Coun Bowden claims the closure will cause an increase in fly-tipping around the area. She said: “My concern is that residents who cannot access Lamby Way will have nowhere to dump their rubbish. What we have seen in the Wenallt will become a pattern. It will be chaos.”
South Wales police have said they are investigating the fly-tipping at Wenallt woods.
