Dad-to-be stole two bottles of expensive gin from the John Lewis store in Cardiff

The Cardiff man was emotional as he appeared in court weeks before his partner is due to give birth

A MAN who is due to become a dad later this year stole two bottles of gin from John Lewis while living on the streets.

Philip Coslett, 40, who said he is now living in the Youth Hostels Association (YHA) hostel on Tyndall Street in Cardiff, pleaded guilty to stealing a £40 and £30 bottle of gin from John Lewis on January 6 and February 5 respectively.

He was given a £120 fine, plus surcharge, which totalled £309. He was not ordered to pay any compensation.

Coslett attended Cardiff Magistrates Court with his 20-week pregnant partner and was visibly emotional in the courtroom.

“Mr Coslett accepts that he was alcohol dependant at the time,” said Isobelle Thompson, Coslett’s defence lawyer.

He has nine previous convictions for 14 offences, but was last in court in 2022, magistrates were told.

He has now stayed in a strictly alcohol-free YHA hostel since February 19.

Chair of the magistrates’ bench, Wayne Mortimer, said he could see the efforts that Mr Coslett was going to and wished him and his partner the best for their baby, due to be born on July 31.
